Firstly, very many thanks to all of you who have already sponsored
myself and colleagues for the Edinburgh Marathon through the team
website. We're doing well building towards our target and your
donations are very much appreciated. The donations are always a boost
to me when I'm dragging up the motivation to get out for my training
runs. The training is probably the hardest part - four times a week for
13 weeks now, including an increasingly long run at the weekend (20
miles on Saturday - that was hard!).
Now seems like a good time to ask again for your support - it is five
weeks to go to the big day (11 June, to be televised on Channel 5
apparently). If you are willing to sponsor me and haven't yet got
around to it, please do so as soon as you can. You can donate online
with a credit or debit card (and can Sponsor or Pledge on completion).
If you want to send cash or cheques to me, I will happily gather these
together and add them online (as I have done already for some of you).
We are raising funds for Research Autism, who exist to fund UK research
into interventions for people with autism and their families. Many of
you will know that we have been running a large study in Southampton
(the Southampton Childhood Autism Programme, or SCAmP) for the past 6-7
years. We were comparing an education intervention delivered at home to
pre-school children with autism to "standard" provision for these
children from their local education authorities. We are just finalising
the main report on the results of this work, and these are very
encouraging. Our research team is currently assessing all the children
in the study again now that they have been in school placements for
about two years. Research Autism is part-funding this study. This
follow-up is crucially important because we need to know whether the
gains children made have been maintained. If gains have not been
maintained, then more research would be needed to work out how best to
ensure this in future. Many children with autism in the UK now receive
intensive early intervention programmes using similar methods to those
delivered in SCAmP. Although there is gathering evidence that this can
work for many children, we have little idea whether they continue to
thrive once in the less structured and intensive environment in most
schools. Thus, the work that Research Autism is supporting is very
important.
To sponsor the SCAmP team, including me, go to:

Please also encourage family, friends and colleagues to support
Research Autism by passing on this email.
Many thanks
Richard
