I've just been contacted by someone from the National Association of
Primary Care. They are apparently producing a report on health
impact assessment in the new year, aimed at GPs and other primary care
workers. I was first asked if we wanted to take out a very expensive
advertisement. I was then asked if we wanted 'the exclusive rights
to write an editorial'. It rapidly became apparent that WE would
have to pay THEM in order publish this editorial - and that if we
chose not to advertise with them, the invitation to do the editorial
no longer existed. Presumably these extraordinary arrangements are
part of the wonderful neoliberal marketplace in which we all so
enthusiastically participate
