Theme: While in the West women are leaving the churches, they continue to
constitute the majority of religious and spiritual practitioners. This
volume investigates the relationship between women and secularization
through answering the questions: if women undergird the foundations of
religion, but are leaving in large numbers, why are they leaving? Where
are they going? And what are they doing?
Given that secularization theories have generally focused on the decline
of Christianity and, sometimes, its replacement by post-traditional and
New Age spiritualities, we want to discover whether these questions are
relevant to non-Christian religions.
This book gives an overview of the quantitative work in the field, and
secondly, an in-depth examination of women s experiences based on
empirical studies.
The volume is due for publication by Ashgate in 2007.
Topics: The volume is broken down into subsections: quantitative work in
the field, Christian Women, Women and Alternative Spiritualities, and
Women and Islam. We are specifically seeking contributions to the section
on Islam that look at issues surrounding Muslim women in the West and
secularization.
Deadlines are non-negotiable.
