If you want to try Debian
http://www.debian.org
you can have a look at
http://apsy.gse.uni-magdeburg.de/fsl
You can get native packages for i386 (Intel or AMD 32bit), amd64 (AMD only
64bit), ia64 (Itanium) and powerpc (Macs, not the new Intel stuff, note that
you have to run Debian, the packages will not works with MacOS X!) from there.
So you are quite free to choose your hardware platform.
I would recommend installing Debian etch (not stable aka sarge). Debian
etch is about to become the new stable release and offers much more than
the last one.
The above website also offers some benchmarks. Looking at the table you
can get a feeling about the relation of hardware and speed.
You should also look at
http://www.fmrib.ox.ac.uk/fsl/feeds/doc/timings.html
for more benchmarks.
Cheers,
Michael
