DIscovering Cultural Knowledge: DAta STandards for ARchaeological DigitaL sYstems?
DICK DASTARDLY
Both ridiculous acronyms I know but I thought I'd get the ball rolling!

All very true. But what about familiarity with brand name - isn't that
why MDA chose to stick with the acronym? Please do suggest alternative
names to MIDAS.
Kind regards

As with many acronyms, it is irritating and can lead to long and
frustrating searches for clarification if it is not clear what it stands
for. I still prefer to think of the Museum Documentation Association
rather than a body identified only by an acronym, whether it is "mda" or
"MDA".
Searching for the meaning of MIDAS can also lead to the wrong
conclusions: for example, Scottish Natural Heritage use it to mean
"Management Information for Designated Areas and Sites", and as this is
in the same area as yours there is quite a risk of confusion.
Google gives 1,140,000 hits for MIDAS, even when limited to UK pages,
so it's not very distinctive!
