Dear Pat
Interesting to following this discussion about FISH factsheets.
Just a quick reminder that in terms of your interest in getting
up-to-speed with HERs, that the HER Forum email list also exists and
that all that you need to do to join is to ask me. We now have over 260
members, the majority of whom are HER and SMR Officers working in local
authorities. The list discusses current issues relating to HERs, shares
ideas and relevant news items.
You can access the archives of the list at:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/herforum.html
Also with regards to factsheets relating to HERs, here at the National
Monuments Record we have the Heritage Information Partnerships (HIPs)
Team whose main role is liaison with local authority HERs. The HIPs
team has produced two information sheets relating to HERs, one entitled
"Services for Historic Environment Records from the NMR" and the other
"Historic Environment Records, A Guide for Users". These are both
currently under revision, but you can download the existing versions at
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.8332
If you have any specific questions or would like to join the HER Forum
discussion list, then please email me off-list

Dear Isabel,
I am most definitely in favour of factsheets. I don't think you need to
worry about durability so much as ease of use (e.g. a cheap therefore
bulk method of generating hard copy is preferable to an expensive method
which will generate hard copy that will be around in a couple of
centuries' time).
Topics: I think it is important that emergent issues are covered: I
would like to hear authoritative voices saying 'we don't yet know ...'.
this is because if I don't hear the authoritative voices saying this, I
tend to assume that I've not looked hard enough for a definitive answer.
In June, I will be embarking on a major exercise in getting myself back
up to speed on all things concerning HERs and perhaps I could let you
know where I can't find anything authoritative, and therefore a fact
sheet would be useful?
Formats: pdf is useful (I have partners who regularly ask me to 'print
it off' when I tell them 'it's on the web'), but that should be
additional to, not instead of web pages (because it's so much less
accessible). 2 or 4 sides of A4 at a decent point size.
Cheers,
Pat
