Apologies for cross-posting:
A 5 day course in Newburgh, UK. Guest instructor: Professor Ian T. Jolliffe.
When: Monday 22 May until Friday 26 May 2006.
Where: Ythan hotel, Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, UK
Course: "Analysing Biological and Environmental Data -Using
Multivariate Analysis -".
This is a special course with Prof. Ian Jolliffe as guest lecturer.
The course describes and illustrates a number of techniques which are
used to reduce dimensionality in, and interpret, multivariate data
sets that arise in biology, ecology and environmental science. The
technique of principal component analysis (PCA) plays a central role
in the course. Ian Jolliffe is author of the most comprehensive book
on PCA, published in 2002. He has also taught courses on multivariate
analysis more generally to a variety of audiences for more than 30
years. The other instructors are Dr. Alain F. Zuur and Dr. Elena
Ieno, authors (with GM Smith) of the book "The Analysis of Ecological
Data" (Forthcoming). As well as covering PCA itself, the course will
include several other multivariate techniques that are widely used on
biological and environmental data; many of the techniques have
similar underpinnings to PCA, so the latter provides a unifying
theme. The emphasis in the course will be on when and how to use each
technique described.
Course outline:
Monday: Measures of similarity, NMDS and the Mantel test (Alain
Zuur and Elena Ieno).
Tuesday: Principal component analysis - the basic technique (Ian
Jolliffe). Interpretation, implementation and rotation.
Wednesday: Extensions of PCA; PCA regression, SCoTLASS.
Morphometric data analysis. Discriminant analysis (Ian Jolliffe).
Thursday morning: Redundancy analysis and db-RDA transformations
(Alain Zuur and Elena Ieno).
Thursday afternoon: Clustering (Ian Jolliffe).
Friday: Correspondence analysis and Canonical correspondence
analysis (Alain Zuur and ELena Ieno). Catch up. Case studies.
Open to: Anyone. This is a non-technical course for biologists.
Price: 500 GBP for students and 600 GBP per non-student. Prices are
excluding 17.5% VAT. The fee includes coffee and tea, course material
and a 1-year license for Brodgar. Early booking is recommended.
