Postdoctoral Research Fellow 

Applications are invited for the above post in the School of Civil 
Engineering at the University of Nottingham.  The post is within the 
Environmental Fluid Mechanics division and is focused on improved 
formulation and numerical solution of equations of the swash zone, 
including permeability effects and a mobile beach. The successful candidate 
will work primarily with Dr Nick Dodd.

The post forms part of the EPSRC research project “Experimental and 
Numerical Modelling Study of Swash Zone Hydrodynamics and Sediment 
Transport”, which is a collaborative project between the Universities of 
Nottingham and Aberdeen (Dr Tom O’Donoghue and Dr Dubravka Pokrajac).

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting internationally 
leading research in the understanding and numerical modelling of swash zone 
morpho-hydrodynamics, including permeability effects. Other duties will 
include publication of this research in internationally leading journals; 
visits to Aberdeen University to learn from and inform the related 
experimental work; where appropriate, dissemination of research at 
conferences; interaction with PhD students within the Morphodynamics 
Research Group; and other research-related activities.

Candidates must have, or shortly expect to obtain, a PhD in mathematics, 
engineering, physics or a related discipline; expertise and experience in 
the numerical solution of partial differential equations, including 
scientific programming in one or more of Fortran/C/C++/Matlab; and a good 
background in mathematics / mathematical sciences. In addition, candidates 
must be able to work independently, as well as being willing to collaborate 
and learn from/teach others.  Experience of coastal engineering / coastal 
dynamics, and of programming in a linux-based environment are also 
desirable.

Salary will be within the range £24,161 to £30,606 per annum, depending on 
qualifications and experience (salary can progress to £34,448 per annum, 
subject to performance).

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three 
years. Our preferred start date is 1 November or as soon as possible 
thereafter.
