Scottish Institute for Research in Economics
Department of Economics/Health Economics Research Unit
Based at the University of Aberdeen
Two Professors in Economics
The Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) is a joint research
venture of the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Heriot-Watt, St Andrews, Stirling and Strathclyde. Supported by funding
from the Scottish Funding Council, SIRE is directed by Professor John Moore
of the University of Edinburgh. The mission of SIRE is to substantially
enhance academic research in economics in Scotland.
The University of Aberdeen, in conjunction with the Universities of Dundee
and Stirling will play a leading role in Work and Well-being programme, one
of the three SIRE research programmes. This programme focuses on the
economic and social factors that affect the health and productivity of the
population. Four new Professors plus six Lecturers are to be appointed
across the three Universities to take this programme forward. As part of
its commitment the University of Aberdeen will appoint two Full Professors
and (at a later date) two Lectureships.
The University of Aberdeen has a strong tradition of research in applied
economics. The Department of Economics has a long-established expertise in
health, labour and resource economics, with growing strength in
experimental economics. The Health Economics Research Unit (HERU) is one
of Europe's leading centres for research in health economics, with
particular strengths in research on preference elicitation, labour markets
and incentives in health care.
The Chairs are in (Micro) Econometrics and the Microeconomics of Health but
all suitably qualified individuals able to make a contribution to SIRE's
Work and Well-being theme are strongly encouraged to apply. The two
lectureships at Aberdeen contributing to the Work and Well-being are to be
advertised at a later date. It is intended that the new Chairs will play an
important role in these appointments.
One of the Professorships will be a joint appointment between the
Department of Economics, University of Aberdeen Business School and HERU.
The other will be an appointment located entirely within the Department of
Economics, Business School. A highly competitive remuneration package will
be available for exceptional candidates.
