I would like to invite you to participate in a
discussion being held at the Centre for Drawing at
Wimbledon School of Art on Thursday 26th January at
2.00pm-5.00pm followed by drinks.
My PhD examines how drawing as a mode of enquiry can
reveal new knowledge and understanding of pathology.
Drawing is an essential tool which is adaptable to
each different circumstance and flexible enough to
reflect the phenomenon of each unique experience of
disease. It is the most appropriate methodology for
gathering raw data and interpreting results. It has
the advantage of being rigorous and transparent in its
process. Sometimes photographs and medical images can
appear to be impersonal and the information they
contain is difficult to understand. Drawing informs
us more directly about what it is like to experience
the disease.
Encounters with Disease is an opportunity to test out
aspects of my on-going research.
I would particularly appreciate your thoughts on:
What are the drawings doing?
How are they informing?
How is that different from other ways of informing?
What are the effects of being given information
through visual enquiry?
Are they doing something else?
Or are they doing nothing at all?
I hope some of you are able to come and look forward
to hearing your views and opinions.
Lucy Lyons
