How about considering drawing in terms of indexicality?
If you consider the trait of the indexical sign being that of a physical,
causal relationship between the representation and object, the act of
drawing in itself can be considered an indexical process. The physical
drawing contains indexical traces of the pencil moving across the
surface/paper/wall. But this applies just as much to the trace of an
aeroplane in the sky, or the shadow cast from an object - any drawing can be
considered an indexical sign, whether mimetic or automatic.
I guess its just another can of worms! Defining drawing is an open ended,
infinite research topic!
Best wishes,
Rachel
