Hi John,
I read the same TLS article and obtained a copy of
Maynard's book, and yes it's been included as part of
the survey.
Thanks for the heads-up though.
The notion of groundlessness arises from the
algorithmic interpretation of gesture in conventional
software frameworks. Recognising this as a gap between
the pen and ground, in the sense that no direct
correlation between gesture and mark is necessary, I
produce my own frameworks that occupy this space in
which drawing exists as an informational pattern. This
informational state of 'drawing without a ground'
(more Shannon than Mckay at this stage) renders it
amenable to inter-semiosis, i.e drawing into other
media/ sign systems.
It attends to the dichotomous relationship between the
static and the dynamic. This is explored as an idea
even down to my literature review, where I scan Rawson
in using OCR software and then map his text (using
software that I've written) in a variety of ways using
different search criteria. So groundlessness can also
apply to something as authorative as a printed text.
Mark.
