Hi Sarah,
I'm a Design and Technology teacher at Ossett School in Wakefield, and we
have a couple of laser cutters
in our department that both run using CorelDRAW.
We do a specific laser cutter project for the year 7's in which they make a
maze puzzle and the yr 11, 12 and 13 GCSE and A level course uses the
facility a lot also.
Depending on levels of ability, then we do encourage the basic graphic work
to be developed further in CorelDRAW
in the form of packaging design, to take full advantage of the poential of
Corel as more than just a vector
drawing package.
However, in terms of the laser cutter, various mazes where created using the
CorelTRACE facility to get vector outlines from basic JPG files. We then
offer these to the kids to use in their puzzles if they wish. I think that
this tracing technique has a great deal of potential for arriving at quick
figurative graphic images that can be then cut out of different coloured
acrylic sheets (3 to 9mm).
We have also found that mosaic work is really effective, popular and easy to
achieve.
I have attached a couple of examples of CorelDRAW work that we have done.
One for a year 11 Lamp using stacked disks, one Yr 7 Maze Puzzle full page
and a Yr 12 piece that illustrates the more graphic potential.
Cheers,
Bob Claytor

Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] Drawing by laser
Dear DRN
I am an artist (contemporary jewellery designer) based in the engineering
department at the University of Manchester. I am researching the potential
use
of lasers in the creative industries, particularly using drawings for
surface
marking. I would be very interested to know if anyone has any experience of
this technology or is currently working with it.
Look forward to hearing from you
