The Department of Sociology is at the heart of a transdisciplinary community of researchers in critical cultural areas who are active in the Canadian Association of Cultural Studies. Conferences and publications such as Space and Culture, Topoi and other networks extend a broad intellectual project to advance theory and reach out to communities. The University is famous for its research excellence. Alberta is the fastest growing region and the local economy in the OECD. Situated on the prairies about 3 hours from the Rockies, Edmonton has a vibrant music scene, excellent libraries and archives and is an excellent base for fieldwork.
