2. CONFERENCE IN TRENTO
Call for Papers
Jean Monnet Conference on “Europe’s Democratic Challenges – EU Solutions?”
School of International Studies, University of Trento
Organised by: School of International Studies, University of Trento, European Union Center at the University of Pittsburgh, Institute of European Studies and International Relations at Comenius University of Bratislava, Institute for European and Russian Studies at Carleton University
Trento, 30 June - 1 July 2006
The University of Trento, along with its partner universities, the University of Pittsburgh, Bratislava and Carleton University, will host a conference on “Europe’s Democratic Challenges – EU Solutions?”. The objective of the conference is to examine some of the most important questions facing European democracy. It is somewhat of a paradox that in the period since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, at precisely the point in time in which there were few credible alternatives to liberal democracy, there have been growing doubts about the capacity of the structures and institutions of liberal democracy to respond to contemporary problems. The conference will concentrate on the ways in which the European Union may contribute solutions, or be one of the source of the problems, in three essential areas where democracy seems to face its greatest challenges: institutions, identity and ideas, and political economy. The conference will be organised around six main themes:
* Europe’s constitutional future
* The EU in a comparative perspective
* Democracy in the candidate states
* Enlargement and democracy in the EU
* The European Social Model(s)
* Economic Competitiveness
The conference will be the culmination of a seminar series on the same subject that was sponsored by the European Union as part of its Jean Monnet initiatives. Details for the conference and the seminar series may be found at:
http://www.soc.unitn.it/eudemocracy
If you are interested in participating in the conference, please send a short (1-2) page abstract to by 1 March. Authors selected will be notified by 15 March and asked to send drafts of their papers by 10 June 2006.
The conference will make available 7 grants for young scholars (candidates who have had a PhD awarded in the last five years or PhD candidates at an advanced stage in their research) of €400. The grants will be primarily for authors selected to present papers but they may be awarded to young scholars who would like to attend as discussants. If you are interested in being considered for a grant, please send along short covering letter describing current research and publications.
