Random Quotes

"Web 2.0 is about sharing and connectivity and participation. It is a
user-centered era of the Web. We are moving away from expert-dictated,
exclusionary models of information organization and toward inclusive,
participatory ones." Ellyssa Kroski, The Hive Mind: Folksonomies and
User-Based Tagging

"Web 2.0 is about remix. For too long, we have jumped from one area of the
Web to another, struggling with different interfaces, ignoring endless
advertisements, and wading through uninteresting content on a site in order
to locate the service, document, or snippet that meets our needs.
Increasingly, we can unambiguously reference and call upon the service,
document or snippet that we require, incorporating it into something new
that is both ours and the original contributors'". Paul Miller, Web 2.0:
Building the New Library.

Open Educational Resources survey

OECD's Centre for Educational Research and Innovation is carrying out a
study on Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education. As one part
of that study they are launching a web based survey for individual teachers,
instructors and researchers using or producing OER.

They would like to invite anyone working in a higher educational institution
that uses or produces open learning content, such as courses, courseware,
content modules, learning objects, collections and journals, or open
software tools to develop, use, re-use and deliver learning content, to take
their survey. It will not take more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

This is the link to the survey:
http://www2.oecd.org/survey/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?surveyid=1075

Anybody completing the questionnaire will receive a free electronic copy of
the final report.
For more information regarding the study, please see:

3. NICE WEB SITE
---------------------------
In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes
come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a
short review. The sites will often be UK based, may be small or large, and
be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions
we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web
Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site
Archive.

CiteULike
http://www.citeulike.org/
I like the idea of this site, which was first mentioned some time ago in
this Newsletter. CiteULike is a free service to help academics share, store,
and organise the academic papers they are reading. When you see a paper on
the web that interests you, you can click one button and have it added to
your personal library. CiteULike automatically extracts the citation
details, so there's no need to type them in yourself. It all works from
within your web browser. There's no need to install any special software.

Because your library of citations is stored on the server, you can access it
from any computer.

7. BOOK REVIEW
--------------------------
Digital Copyright
by Paul Pedley,
Facet Publishing, 2005
Single user: 1-85604-573-0 #34.95 plus VAT
Single site licence: 1-85604-559-5 #175.00 plus VAT

'Digital Copyright' is the first in the new series of Executive i-briefings
from Facet Publishing. Published in electronic format, it is available on a
single user or single site licence and viewed using Adobe Reader. The
author, Paul Pedley [currently Head of Research at the Economist
Intelligence Unit] has a wealth of experience in the field of copyright and
legal issues. He has published extensively in these areas, has worked in the
information department of a law firm and currently runs workshops on
copyright and legal matters relating to library and information services.

This publication will be a welcome guide to anyone trying to get to grips
with copyright and how it relates to the electronic environment. The book
asks the central questions of if, and how, electronic content differs from
print, in terms of copyright. These questions are dealt with clearly and
without burdening the reader with excessive legal jargon. In an area heavily
dependent on legal documents and directives it succeeds with an accessible
writing style.

The book covers an introduction to the concept of copyright, issues specific
to digital information; categories of digital information; licences,
contracts or a set of terms and conditions; permitted acts; educational
establishments; authors' rights and useful resources. The content is well
structured and includes very practical resources such as checklists, sample
permission request forms and flow charts to aid decision making on
permissions. There is also a useful glossary (helpfully placed at the start
of the book) and tips and explanations set out in boxes throughout the text.
There is sobering use of legal cases.

The e-book format is exploited to include weblinks - opening up new levels
of extended reading from within the text. There are links to, for example,
relevant Acts, Regulations and Directives - but these are not overused. The
format allows you to personalise the text with impunity - scribble your own
notes on the pages using the Note tool, attach your own files to the text
with virtual paper clips and emphasise text using the reversible highlighter
tool.

Comprehensive in terms of content with good formatting and presentation,
this book will be of use to a wide range of readers including website
developers, licence negotiators, virtual learning environment content
developers and those advising on copyright. However, anyone wishing to gain
an insight into copyright in the electronic environment would benefit from
reading this book.
