PRESS RELEASE
Commission grants EUR 78 million to tailor Grid technology and services
to EU business needs (18 September 2006)The European Commission will
launch on 19 September 2006 in Brussels 23 new research projects on
"Grid" technologies with a total EU funding of EUR 78 million. Grid
technologies work by linking up thousands of computers and devices
dynamically, to provide information processing power on demand, and more
flexibly and cheaply than ever before. For several years already,
EU-funded research in this area has been helping European industry to
deliver high quality, competitive goods and services in, the automotive,
aeronautics, financial, pharmaceutical and media sectors.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
European e-Skills 2006 Conference
5 October 2006 - 6 October 2006 Thessaloniki, GreeceThis event is
organised by several European Commission Directorates-General in
co-operation with the European Centre for the Development of Vocational
Training and leading ICT companies. It will provide a platform for the
presentation and examination of the work of the ICT Task Force and the
new e-skills and e-learning expert group. The outcome of the discussions
will be used to prepare a long-term strategy for ensuring adequate
e-skills in Europe. This could take the form of a Commission action plan
on "e-skills for competitiveness, employability and workforce
development" in early 2007.

REPORTS AND STUDIES
Trade in high-tech products, Statistics in Focus This publication
analyses the high tech trade in the EU Member states, the United States
and Japan. In 2004, the EU-25 was the leading economy in the world when
looking at the value of high tech exports and imports. Good progress was
in particular observed in the new EU Member states. Products related to
electronics and telecommunications had the highest trade share in all
the three economies of the triad.
