18.5 hours per week, 12-month fixed term

The Bristol Black Archives Partnership project is an exciting and innovative Heritage Lottery funded development initiated by a broad partnership interested in collecting, preserving and making accessible Bristol's African-Caribbean history. The partnership is an alliance of Bristol's African-Caribbean community, the City's Museums, Galleries & Archives Service, local Universities and others committed to protecting this heritage.

Based at Bristol Record Office, the Partnership is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated individual to create and deliver talks, presentations, workshops and publicity material to excite and interest people about the importance of recording and collecting local African-Caribbean history. The post holder will be expected to collect archives and objects from the community for transfer to the Record Office and Museums Service for safekeeping, and to catalogue the material collected so it can be easily accessed for research. Responsibilities will include creating and administrating a small touring exhibition to promote the project, training community volunteers and involvement in the production of education resources that reflect local African-Caribbean experience and heritage.

Candidates must have experience of working successfully with community groups on heritage or related matters and experience of communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences. A good knowledge of word processing is essential as is an understanding of, and commitment to, Equalities issues. An interest in the work of museums and archives services and in the history of the city and its communities is also required for this role. The post holder will need to be willing to work regular evenings and weekends.
