Herewith some items about John La Rose that may be of interest. Selma was
thinking of having an event at Marcus Garvey Library on John during Black
History Month. There will be obituaries in the Independent, Guardian and on
Radio 4 this or next week. There is also a lot of other material on him.
You may wish to organise events on John in your libraries. You can check

John La Rose Dies -
Pioneering and Brilliant Chairman of GPI dies
01/03/2006
John La Rose, founder of New Beacon Books, co-founder of the Caribbean
Artists Movement and of the International Book Fair of Radical Black and
Third World Books, died yesterday morning at the Whittington Hospital in
London. Since the 1950s John had been at the forefront of a number of
grassroots political and cultural organisations striving for racial equality
and social justice. Originally from Trinidad but living in London for over
40 years, John was also a poet, essayist and filmmaker. His brilliant
intellect, keen sense of humour and geniality touched everyone who met him,
and he inspired and encouraged people from all walks of life, from all over
the world. In recent years, John had retired due to heart trouble, but he
still took an active role as Chairman of the George Padmore Institute, and
was our guiding beacon. Sadly, John died yesterday of a heart attack at the
age of 78. The GPI staff, Trustees and volunteers mourn the loss of such a
vital and eternally optimistic man. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
Arrangements are presently being made for the funeral of John La Rose.

By JENNY BOURNE, 11:00am, 1 March 2006 --- A stalwart of Black

political organiser, his contribution to the development of Black cultural
expression in the UK cannot be rivalled.
