Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to a recently published pamphlet on
"Does Criminal Justice Work?". I think this critical publication of the
British Crime and Society Foundation is of importance far beyond the
U.K., since it tackles general fundamental issues of the functions,
efficiency and effectivenes of the criminal justice system in postmodern
societies. Of course the opinions expressed in the text may not
necessarily be shared by everybody, as usual in such matters.
Rebecca Roberts was so kind to send me the PDF-Files (full text and
executive summary) directly, which enables me to attach them to this
message.
With best regards,
Hans-J. Kerner
P.S.:
See a short description of the pamphlet and a --- actually at the moment
broken - link to the Crime and Society Foundation website below, after
my signature, in case you would like to study their other activities
and/or publications.

> **NEW PUBLICATION FROM THE CRIME AND SOCIETY FOUNDATION**
> The Crime
> and Society Foundation based at the Centre for Crime and Justice
> Studies at King's College London has just published 'Does criminal
> justice work? The 'Right for the wrong reasons' debate'. The
> government never tires of telling us that crime has fallen
> dramatically in recent years. So why do ministers claim that the
> criminal justice system is failing and needs radical reform? According
> to the pamphlet, ‘Right for the wrong reasons’, the criminal justice
> system is failing, but not for the reasons the government give. The
> real challenge involves giving up on the hopeless attempts to drive up
> criminal justice performance and seek a much broader array of
> solutions to crime than the criminal justice system can ever deliver.
> Following the publication of ‘Right for the wrong reasons’ in July
> 2006, the Crime and Society Foundation requested responses to the
