The Archaeological Discussion Group (ADG) of the American Institute for
Conservation (AIC)is proposing a 1/2 day session for the Object Specialty
Group session in Richmond, Virginia, April 2007. The session will
focus on the issues surrounding the conservation of archaeological
artifacts with suspect provenance.
Papers are sought from:
- Conservators with case-studies and personal experience dealing with
unclear ownership issues;
- Lawyers specializing in cultural heritage law;
- Educators and ethicists proposing or propagating ethical positions;
- Law-enforcement officials;
- Museum curators and other officials collecting or de-accessioning
looted artifacts.
Topics that will be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Current and proposed legislation;
- What actions a conservator should take when confronted with objects
of questionable provenance;
- What steps constitute due diligence when dealing with clients.
Because of the early date of the AIC meeting, the OSG Program Chair
has requested that we have sufficient abstracts in hand by SEPTEMBER 2006.
