AHRC Postdoctoral Research Assistant
(Two year post, £26,002-£27,172)
Camberwell College of Arts, The University of the Arts, London
An English/Greek terminology for the structures and materials of Byzantine
and Greek bookbinding.
Byzantine/Greek manuscripts rarely preserve their original bindings as most
have been rebound over the years. Scattered and limited research into their
history has not provided accurate and consistent terms for their
description, thus the wider scholarly and conservation communities cannot
benefit from such research. One of the largest collections of
Byzantine/Greek bindings is that of the St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai,
Egypt. The systematic examination of this collection will allow the
development of a definitive and consistent bilingual terminology (in both
English and Greek) for Byzantine/Greek bindings.
Applications are invited for an AHRC funded Postdoctoral Research Assistant
to work on the management of the information recorded about the manuscripts
during the conservation survey at the library of St. Catherine's Monastery
in Sinai, Egypt. The work will include completing the transfer of survey
data to a specially designed database and checking for accuracy and
consistency. The successful applicant will contribute to the development or
alteration of the descriptive terms according to bibliographical sources and
communication with scholars from around the world. You will have either a
PhD or equivalent professional experience, a sound knowledge of book
structures and book conservation, as well as a sound knowledge of the use of
computers. Knowledge of modern Greek is desirable.
The closing date: 21 August 2006.
Interview date: 29 and 30 August 2006.
Research Assistant (0.5)– Camberwell/St. Catherine’s Project
(One Year Post £16,107-£20,949 Pro-rata)
Camberwell College of Arts, The University of the Arts, London
To assist in research activities related to St. Catherine’s Research Project.
Byzantine/Greek manuscripts rarely preserve their original bindings as most
have been rebound over the years. One of the largest collections of original
Byzantine/Greek bindings is that of the St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai,
Egypt. Camberwell College of Arts has completed a detailed condition
assessment of the manuscripts from that library and has collected textual
and photographic material from each manuscript. This material is currently
being digitised and stored in a computer database. Similar work is initiated
for selected items of the printed books collection of the monastery.
Applications are invited for a part-time Research Assistant to work on the
digitisation of the information recorded about the manuscripts during the
conservation survey at the library of St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai,
Egypt. The work will include performing and managing slide and paper
scanning projects and reporting on progress. It will also include backing up
recorded data and updating the Project’s website. The successful applicant
will also work on the survey of the printed books by assisting with the
design of the recording methodology and travelling to the monastery if
required. You will have a degree in either computing or conservation, a high
level of information technology competency and excellent organisational
skills, as well as attention to detail and the ability to work accurately
and methodically. Experience of digitisation, XML and MySQL is desirable.
The closing date: 21 August 2006.
Interview date: 29 and 30 August 2006.
