While you can, as Aleks pointed out, play games with pointers, I'm not
sure there is enough information below, or even that you are asking the
right question. What is the equivalence trying to accomplish in the code
that comes later? It is possible that the later code can be revised
using more modern features such that the equivalence is not longer needed.
