My call for applications for bursaries to study at the Fondation Hardt

(repeated below) produced some strong applications, but substantially fewer

than last year; I fear that the timing of my call just before Christmas may

have been at fault. So I have decided to extend the deadline to January 15.

If you *have* already applied no need to do so again, of course,

Robert Parker

Fondation Hardt pour l' Etude de l'Antiquite Classique,

Vandoeuvres, Geneva

The Fondation Hardt is an international research centre for the study

of Classics and Ancient History. It is located in an elegant 18th c. villa in

a park with views of what is generally mistaken for Mont Blanc, and the

accommodation has just gone extensive and very successful modernisation. It

has an excellent and beautiful library, particularly strong in texts and

commentaries, and provides a peaceful environment for a period of

uninterrupted research and writing. It also provides the opportunity to meet

scholars of all ages and all nationalities: there are up to eight in residence

at any one time. The food is excellent! Through the generosity of the

Classical Association and the Societies for the

Promotion of Hellenic and of Roman Studies, a number of bursaries of 400

pounds sterling [probable sum: exact amount to be confirmed] are this year for

the second time being offered to graduate students in the U.K. to enable them

to take advantage of a stay at the Fondation in 2005. Stays are normally of

two, three or four weeks. The costs of accommodation and full board per week

are 350 Swiss francs or about £150. One can get to Geneva easily by Easyjet or

British Airways. The five beneficiaries of such bursaries last year reported

back with utmost enthusiasm about every aspect of their stay.

If you wish to apply for one of these bursaries, please let me know,

by letter or e-mail, by December 31: state what degree you are reading for at

what university, give the title and a brief description of your thesis if you

are writing one, and also the name of your supervisor or someone else whom I

can contact about your work. The

decision will be made by a committee of representatives of the sponsoring

societies chaired by me. Preference may be given to doctoral students. The

library at Vandoeuvres is excellent for texts (including epigraphic texts, and

much early Christian material) and commentaries, and has the main Classics and

ancient history periodicals; it is less strong in archaeology.

If you are successful in applying for a Bursary, you will also need

to apply to the Fondation for an invitation to come and stay, but you can

expect that application to succeed; I will send details to successful

candidates. If you have independent sources of funding you are most welcome

to apply to the Fondation with or without a bursary;

let me know if that is the case.

The period of opening in 2006 will be from approximately mid-February

to early December. The practical information given here replaces that on the

website at http:/www.fondationhardt.ch/, though this is still worth visiting

for views of the villa and library. Please don't hesitate to get in touch

with me if you have queries.
