> Dr. Ibarra, recent recipient of a Sephis research award, is an active and productive scholar who has made a distinctive contribution to Cuban historiography He has focused systematically on aspects of Cuban nation building - the role of political leaders (including studies of Jose Marti, Maximo Gomez) ideology, political parties, social classes - and subjected them to incisive new analyses. His latest work extends his scope to the Hispanic Caribbean in general and provokes interesting comparisons and contrasts with the region as a whole. He is widely published in international journals and his investigation of the social/political origins of the Cuban revolution (> "> Prologue to the Cuban Revolution 1898-1958> "> ) was published in the U.S.
