Historical Materialism Conference
SOAS/Birkbeck 8th- 10th December 2006
Appeal for Accommodation
As hopefully you all know, Historical Materialism - in conjunction with
Socialist Register and the Deutscher Memorial Prize Lecture - will host
a conference at SOAS and Birkbeck the weekend of 8th - 10th December.
The event looks set to be a big success, with around 170 people giving
papers and many more expected to attend. This is particularly
impressive given the conference has been organised without funding, and
many of the paper-givers from abroad are meeting their own transport
costs in order to attend. Others who wish to take part are graduate
students or those surviving precariously on short term contracts – an
all too familiar feature of neo-liberal insecurity. All in all, the
cost of accommodation in the Bloomsbury area is simply beyond reach for
many who would like to take part. As such, we are asking for your help.
We hope to accommodate as many conference participants as possible -
particularly those who are coming from abroad - with readers of HM who
live in the London area. If you are willing to put someone up for the
duration of the conference (two or three nights), please email the
details to Sam Ashman as soon as possible on [log in to unmask]
Many thanks.
