Saw an interesting program on BBC4 last night about MacPherson and
Ossian. I had accepted for many years the line from Johnson that
Ossian was a "fraud". Remember that this was against the background of
the Jacobite rebellion, it appears that Johnson, a lowland Scot and an
english sympathiser, may have been motivated against MacPherson, a
highland scot. My question is, is Ossian really sourced in the oral
traditions of the highland scots? In what sense is it fake?
