Hi,
A wee problem exercising my addled brain is that of marking portfolios, especially if they are to be summatively assessed.
With paper based artificats the feedback generally gets written onto the document along with a mark and the student gets the marked version returned to them. This is not going to be easy to replicate with an electronic portfolio especially those that contain artifacts such as audio, video, powerpoints and simulations. These cannot get "marked" in the same way as document files (word, spreadsheet, etc).
"New" procedures will be required, possibly akin to those used for summative assessment of webpages. This suggests the use of rubrics which, in some cases, could be exactly the same as the template on which the item is based.
There is also the procedures that would be used for the receipt, markinga and return of portfolios. a sample process is given below.
Procedure for dealing with Summative Portfolios:
Student sends downloaded portfolio to staff (in a ZIP file).
Staff extract the portfolio elements and mark each element.
Staff save the marked version with feedback comments (probably on a rubric) under a new filename.
Staff reZIP the marked elements and returns to student and stores marked version in a safe location for future reference if required.
Staff adds grade to Gradebook.
Feedback can be given via the "Comments" link but if a detailed critique of a particular item is necessary it will be difficult to give meaningful references to elements within the item via the "Comments" link.
Question:
Has anyone developed procedures for marking portfolios? If so would they kindly share the information with the list.
regards,
Arthur Loughran
