Thanks for your reply.
Your idea of limiting acess to the Tab display is a step forward but since I am trying to provide different discussion boards for staff and students it would mean creating two (or more) Community tabs which I believe cannot be done.

Why don't you just limit access to this tab to the institutional role
you want? Everyone else can access their organisation sites via the My
Organisations module.
Just an idea.
