Dear All,
Attached are details of the next North West Long Eighteenth-Century
Seminar, on Friday 12 May, When Susan Whyman will be talking on 'Letter
Writing and Literacy in the North of England, 1700-1800'. Susan Whyman
is best known for her highly-praised book Sociability and Power in Late
Stuart England, which explored the extensive correspondence of the
Verneys of Buckinghamshire. Now that she is working on north of England
material, including much from the labouring classes, it is especially
appropriate that her findings are presented to this seminar.
The seminar takes place at 4.00 p.m. (refreshments from 3.30) at the
Council Chamber, University of Manchester Sackville Building, Whitworth
St, near Piccadilly station (directions on poster). There will be early
evening drinks and a meal nearby, to which all are welcome, allowing
time for return train travel to places such as Liverpool, Lancaster,
Leeds, York and even London.
With best wishes,
Robert Poole
Reader in History
St Martin's College, Lancaster.
