I am sure you share the surprise and concern felt by the whole SEN
community at the disbanding of the BECTa inclusion team. Through the years
since MEP/CET had the foresight to focus on special needs in the early
1980s this group has been influential in encouraging the development of
expertise and resources. It is because of the work of the inclusion team,
under successive leaders, that the UK is at the forefront of provision of
ICT for SEN.
At a time when the need for inclusive yet specialist provision is so high
on the public agenda the decision to destroy an identifiable and effective
champion of the needs of learners who have individual and different needs
is, frankly, bizarre.
Since the recent announcement, the many of the concerns felt by the SEN
community have been expressed in individual messages and actions, both
public and private. Since BECTa is a Government controlled "quango" SNUG is
seeking to bring people and organisations together to deliver directly to
MPs in Parliament the many arguments in favour of the inclusion team's work.
We ask you, as an individual or as an organisation to join us in a lobby of
Parliament on Monday 19th June in room 21B in the House of Commons at 3.30
pm. We would like you to write to your MP and the key ministers (again!) to
tell them clearly why we need to retain this vital resource. We will be
preparing a press release and briefing sheet for you to use so please send
an email to <[log in to unmask]> and we will keep you informed of
the preparations.
The support of individuals and organisations from throughout the SEN
community is essential to this campaign. Even if you or your organisation
cannot attend, please express your support for the inclusion team and tell
your MP what is happening!
