Dear Charlotte,
I have always included the document reference on our exhibition
captions, for the simple reason that it becomes a lot easier for us to
find a document should a visitor become a reader and request to see
the document, or should someone write about the documents they
have seen and publish the material in some way. I have seen people
taking notes when attending the exhibitions I have done for the public
and staff. Since we are a small archive, when readers come and we
prepare the documents for them with a 'Reader Sheet', where we
always put the full ref Nos, titles and dates so that they can take this
information away and use the information for their research; I would
say that the same applies to exhibitions. So, I would say yes, it is
important to include the ref nos. I could provide you with samples of
captions if of interest to show your colleagues.
Regards,
Michele
