Mary Morris Knowles: the "Ingenious Quaker" and her connections
A talk by Judith Jennings, Director of the Kentucky Foundation for Women
The subject of Judith's latest book, Gender, Religion and Radicalism in the Long Eighteenth Century (Ashgate, August 2006) Quaker artist and author Mary Morris Knowles was a woman of many facets - a radical thinker, a brilliant conversationalist, a respected religious writer, an advocate for the abolition of slavery, a poet and a talented artist of needle painting.
The talk will highlight Mary's accomplishments, examine her disputes with Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, and look at the connections between religion, radicalism and gender then and now.
Judith Jennings is Director of the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Previous publications include The Business of Abolishing the British slave trade 1783 - 1807.
This is a free event. All welcome.
