In reply to Sam Johnston's request re research services Sheffield Archives
decided to contract outs its paid research service rather than attempt to
set up a self funded post.
The tendering process has recently ended, however the documentation is still
available at:

Subject: Research service - self-funding posts
I'm considering the options for setting up a (probably part-time) paid
enquiry post as the public demand appears to exist for it. However, I know
that the authority will not provide a salaried post to support this.
Therefore, the only way I can see it working is if the post were to be self
funding. I understand other offices operate a similar system and I'd like
to know more. Questions arising are:
The employee's contractual status vis-a-vis other staff in regard to such
matters as pension, NI and holiday entitlement?
What happens if demand for the service cannot be sustained?
How best to market the service?
Any profit from the enquiry service - is this used to benefit the archive
service as a whole, or does the parent authority grab it back?
All information gratefully received
Thanks
Sam
