Archives for London invites you to the next in its inaugural seminar series,
to be held on 1 June 2006 at London Metropolitan Archives.
It’s a Need To Know basis: Journalism and the use of FOI
This seminar will be delivered by Rob Evans, a journalist at The Guardian.
Following on from AfL’s successful day event based around the first year of
the Freedom of Information Act, Rob Evans will be talking about the use
that journalists can make of the FOI Act in their work. Rob will
concentrate on his own experience of the act, including the types of
information he has requested under the Act, and the reasons why he did so.
He will also give his views on whether he believes the Act is working in
the way that it was set up to do.
The seminar should be of interest to users of archives, as it will provide
practical examples of the way FOI has impacted on access to archival
information which may previously have been restricted.
Archive professionals will also find it useful to learn the uses to which
members of the print media can put their collections. It will be
especially useful to those whose records are used regularly by journalists
or other members of the media.
Doors will open at 5.30 and the talk will start at 6pm. Refreshments will
be available. The seminar is an open forum and following the talk attendees
are welcome to ask questions, exchange news, and discuss matters of
interest. The event will finish at 7.30pm.
Please let Nicola Avery know if you are coming - e-mail her on:

place but are unable to attend on the night please let Nicola know as soon
as possible, as failure to do so may deprive someone else of a place if the
event proves popular.
