LONDON MUSEUMS LIBRARIANS & ARCHIVISTS GROUP*
Invites you to a free seminar on
'WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES'
Wednesday May 10th 2006, 2pm-4.30pm
at the VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, Seminar Room 3
(come to the main entrance on Cromwell Road and ask a warder for directions)

ALM's vision for 2010 includes the following: London's archive, library and museum collections will be valued ...not only as repositories of knowledge, but as sources of inspiration and understanding that make a significant, measurable impact on the lives of individuals and communities. Practitioners in museums, libraries and archives need to be proactive with a wide range of audiences if this vision is to become a reality. The seminar offers the chance to hear two speakers who work widely with communities and to discuss the issues with them. They are:

Samantha Cairns, Head of Learning and Access Department, Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms

'I finally know who my school was named after!' or 'Making connections: the Community Learning Programme at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms.'

How do you set up a community learning programme? How much work is it? How much expertise do you need? What will work and what doesn't! Samantha Cairns will give a candid presentation on the audience development work of the Learning and Access Department over the last 18 months at the Museum, and will give her answers to the above questions.

Jan Pimblett, Head of Education, London Metropolitan Archives

Working With and For Communities

LMA has been involved in a number of community projects. This talk will explore successful approaches and pitfalls to avoid based on work done in partnership with Groundwork Camden / Islington and the St Luke's Local History Project funded by MLA London's Community Links programme.

BOOKING: Places are limited to about 60 so please let us know you are attending by May 2nd. E-mail [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> to register. Attendance is free. A charge will be made for light refreshments. Seminar is wheelchair accessible and fitted with a hearing loop.

*LMLAG is an informal grouping of archivists and librarians in national museums and galleries in London. They aim to promote best practice and meet the needs and aspirations of museums and their developing audiences, to promote opportunities to learn from each other and from others, and raise awareness of our present and potential abilities among museums and the archive and library professions.

As well as colleagues from museums and galleries, we welcome to this seminar any interested individuals from other sectors and professions.
