Hi Seren,
It was good to see you on Saturday & I found the meeting really useful &
enjoyable.
My main walnut finds were from Reading Waterfront, several phases from
late C12th to C15th (see p. 89, Wessex Archaeology report no. 5, 1997).
In my own old-fashioned file card records I have also noted the
following;
Earliest post-R = pre AD851 ditch, McKenna, WJB (1991) Long Lane,
Beverley, Sheff Exc Rep 1, 209-215
C12th pollen from Nantwich, Sue Colledge AML rep 3347
RB pollen Davies & Turner, 1979 New Phytologist 82 (but only 1 grain !)
Other authors say the absence of RB pollen suggests walnuts were only
imported in RB (Roach, F.A. (1985) Cultivated Fruits of Britain.
Blackwell.cultivated fruits & nuts book; Greig review - Greig, James
R.A. (1991) The British Isles. In Willem van Zeist, Krystyna Wasylikowa
& Karl-Ernst Behre, Progress in Old World Palaeoethnobotany. A.A.
Balkema, Rotterdam. 299-334.)
But I have a pers. comm.. from Isabel Figuerial that she has RB charcoal
from Kingscotte (could be furniture?)
I'm sure I have some other Med finds, but nothing v. early.
Do you know about Helmut Kroll's European database? - v. useful.
Happy searching!
Best Wishes,
Wendy

Subject: FW: Juglans regia introductions to the UK
Dear All
Sorry that came out before I'd finished it, it should have read:
Does anyone have any references for the introduction of Walnut to the
UK? I've got a couple of refs for the 13/15th century from disperate
sites across the UK, and know about Roman egs, but was wondering if
there was a paper anyone could think of more directly addressing the
period in between?
Many thanks
