Dear Tja¹a and others,
Together with my archaeological colleague Erik Drenth I have published several finds of wooden handles from Bronze Age and Iron Age tools, but unfortunately all in Dutch up to now. I have the following references:
Brinkkemper, O., & E. Drenth 2002: De gesteelde hamerbijl van Emmer-Compascuum C14-gedateerd, Nieuwe Drentse Volksalmanak 119: 123-127 [PDF: 0.3 MB] (handle of ash)
Brinkkemper, O., E. Drenth, R. de Man & P. Stassen 2002: De bronzen kokerbeitel van het "Eupen Barchien" te Havelte (gem. Westerveld, prov. Drenthe, Nl.), Lunula 10, 16-18. (handle of oak)
Drenth, E., & O. Brinkkemper 2002: Houten bijlstelen en lanspuntschachten uit de bronstijd in Nederland, met speciale aandacht voor hun symbolische betekenis, Lunula 10, 19-25. (We are preparing an English article about this subject, the non-functional use of wood species (esp. Oak) for axe handles in the Bronze Age)
Brinkkemper, O., & E. Drenth, 2003: Nieuwe gegevens over oud hout. Een lanspuntschacht uit Erica en een bijlsteel uit Nieuw-Weerdinge, Nieuwe Drentse Volksalmanak 120, 152-157 (PDF in preparation) (shaft of spearhead and socketed axe handle, both of ash)
Brinkkemper, O., & E. Drenth, 2005: Nogmaals de steel van het Eupen Barchien en de pijl van Drenthe (NL), Lunula 13, 15-18 [PDF: 0.4 MB] (once more the oak axe handle)
The articles in Nieuwe Drentse Volksalmanak have an English summary.
I can send you the PDF files on request, and photocopies of the other articles.
With kind regards,
Otto Brinkkemper

Onderwerp: AW: wood handle in archaeological axe
There are many from Swiss Neolithic waterlogged settlements... see e.g.
Schweingruber 1976. Most of these handles are of ash-wood!
