A central theme that the Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics
(C-SAP) and the 'Race' and Ethnicity study group of the British
Sociology Association (BSA) have been jointly exploring in recent years
is how ‘race’ and ethnicity is being taught in the social sciences. They
have been keen to discover what challenges educators face when they
attempt to articulate the complex sets of issues around ‘race’ and
ethnicity and, importantly, what learning, teaching and assessment
innovations academics have developed to help them in this process.
This conference, being jointly facilitated by C-SAP and the BSA, aims to
build upon past successful events and provide a space to raise some
important – and sometimes uncomfortable – questions about our collective
understanding of how the issues of 'race' and ethnicity can be dealt
with in our higher education curriculum. This event will provide an
opportunity to meet and network with others working in HE who have and
interest in learning, teaching and assessment in the area of ‘race’ and
ethnicity.
Draft Programme:
# A late afternoon-early evening pre-conference film and book launch (June
27), will precede the one-day Conference (June 28) which will consist of
plenary, workshop and poster sessions.
# Charles Lemert and Mark Christian will offer the two plenary sessions.
# A number of parallel workshops will examine some of the different modes
of learning, teaching and assessment practice that take place. These
workshops will be facilitated by invited speakers.
# We are inviting proposals for posters on the theme of teaching ‘race’ in
the social sciences – SEE BELOW
C-SAP will launch two (Farrar and Todd; Spencer and Todd) edited books
arising from its successful conference in November 2004 on teaching and
learning in the field of ‘race’ and a third (Susie Jacobs) book arising
from earlier research in this area.
