Medical Research Council / Uganda Virus Research Institute
MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS

The MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS was established in 1989, based on
a bilateral agreement between the Governments of Uganda and the United
Kingdom. The overall goal of the Unit is to contribute to an improvement of
the health of the people in developing countries, particularly in Uganda
and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The Unit conducts large-scale
epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and
immunological research and behavioural studies. The Administrative Section,
the Research Laboratories and the Statistical Section of the Unit are based
in Entebbe. Major studies are conducted at field stations and in urban
centres at various sites within South Uganda. The Unit has an international
reputation for excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. Renewed funding for
research has recently been secured for the period 2006 – 11.

The Clinical and Epidemiological Research Programme comprises various
observational and intervention cohort projects. It is staffed with four
senior and six junior epidemiologists and a team of infectious disease
physicians, and various field and support staff.

The Statistical Section is currently staffed with two senior and three
junior statisticians, six data managers and about thirty data entry
officers and other support staff.

The Basic Science Research Programme comprises virological and
immunological projects and is currently staffed with two virologists, two
immunologists, and about 10 technologists.

The Social Science Project conducts behavioural research. It has its own
programme of work and performs investigations that help to understand and
interpret the results of clinical and epidemiological studies. It is
staffed with one senior social and three junior social scientists and a
team of interviewers and field workers.

There is a well staffed and equipped Laboratory Service Section, a
Community Development Project and an Administrative Section.

We are interested in receiving applications from suitably qualified
candidates for the position of Statistician.

The holder of the position will provide major input in the statistical
department of the Unit. He/she will organise and supervise data management
and plan, perform and/or supervise statistical analyses for a number of
observational epidemiological studies, clinical trials and large scale
intervention trials. He/she will be involved in one-to-one mentoring of
junior statistical research associates and data managers. The post holder
will have an opportunity to develop a programme of research of his/her own
within the Unit’s disease focus; and will make substantial contributions to
the publications of the Unit’s research results. He/she must be able to
form and maintain collaborative links with colleagues in the MRC unit, and
with scientists and statisticians from other institutions. The post is
ideal for an applicant who wishes to pursue a scientific career as
statistician or epidemiologist in medical research.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a background in
mathematics and statistics with a PhD or MSc degree and at least 4 years of
professional experience in statistics within a research environment. Good
interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential, as
are excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. A substantial track
record of relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals is essential.
Working experience in developing countries and experience in medical
research and participation in multicentre studies will be an added advantage.

The salary for this post will depend on qualifications and experience and
will be within Band 3 (the salary range for this band is between £34,588
and £42,331 per annum). For displaced staff the package will also include
generous overseas allowances, furnished accommodation, flights and other
benefits. The post will initially be for 2 years extendable by mutual
agreement.
