The Highland Biostatistics Group and the Highland Royal
Statistical Society Group are holding a joint meeting at which
Professor Adrian Bowman and Dr. Iain McKendrick will both
give presentations on the application of statistics in the
biological and environmental sphere.
Professor Bowman, Professor of Statistics at University of
Glasgow, and will give a lecture entitled:
"The use of additive models in environmental modelling"
Additive models extend standard regression methods by allowing
very flexible, but smooth, relationships between variables of
interest. The basic ideas and potential benefits of these models
will be outlined and illustrated on data from several different
environmental studies.
Dr. Iain McKendrick is a senior statistician working with Biomathematics
and
statistics Scotland and he is based in Edinburgh. He will talk on:
"E. coli 0157: statistics and mathematical modelling to integrate
epidemiology and clinical trials".
Both talks will be held in the Scottish Agricultural College,
Drummondhill, Inverness on Wednesday 7th June starting at 3pm.
Additionally Adrian Bowman will give a talk tailored for Secondary
School Children which he will give at Inverness Royal Academy. This
talk is entitled
"Statisticians count"
How can you tell the sex of a herring gull?
What makes the faces of boys different from those of girls?
How do we detect environmental change?
..........
Questions like these, and many others, need good measurements,
a way of spotting the underlying patterns and a way of
identifying when the pattern changes. This is the sort of
thing statisticians do. The talk will illustrate this on
several real-life problems.
