Retirement Products Actuarial, Legal & General Assurance Society
Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCL
Research Scientist in Statistics and Health Information
Salary: £32-34 K p.a. depending on qualifications and experience
Project title: Identification and quantification of the drivers behind
improvements in life expectancy in middle age by social class over the last
three decades.
Since 1970, life expectancy at middle age has increased by more than the
rest of the century combined. This phenomenon has been analysed primarily
in terms of the impact of medical care and lifestyle on coronary heart
disease. However important questions remain about the differential impact of
these and other explanatory factors on the major causes of death in
different social groups.
This project is an exciting opportunity for a talented and self-motivated
individual who
- wants to make a real contribution to our understanding of questions of
direct relevance to policy: why are people living longer and how do the
causes vary by social group?
- wants to work at one of the UK's leading financial services companies in
an exciting collaboration with one of the UK’s premier universities.
Legal & General wish to appoint a research scientist who will
- identify and analyse the literature on key health care, social and
environmental changes which are likely to have had an impact on life
expectancy over the last 30 years
- undertake the analysis of health service and other data
- contribute to the presentation of results in high impact peer
reviewed journals and other media including conference presentations.
The post holder will have
- a research based postgraduate degree in a relevant quantitative
field
- postgraduate practical experience in a relevant area
- excellent practical statistical analysis, data management and
computing skills
- the ability to systematically review and critically interpret health
and health care research literature.
The post holder will work in a small team accountable to Mr Joseph Lu, Legal
& General and to Professor Rosalind Raine, Health Care Evaluation Group,
Dept of Epidemiology, UCL. The appointment is full time for three years.
Informal enquiries welcome. Please contact: Joseph Lu ([log in to unmask];
tel: 01737 376481) or Professor Rosalind Raine ( [log in to unmask]; tel 0207
