Director of the Postgraduate Statistics Centre, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Lancaster, UK
Applications are invited for the directorship (at professorial level) of the HEFCE-funded Postgraduate Statistics Centre at Lancaster University. The Postgraduate Statistics Centre is one of 74 Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in England, with specific focus on the development of postgraduate statistics, both within the discipline of statistics and more broadly in other disciplines. The award is partially funding a £3.3m building to expand the postgraduate activities of the department and to provide state of the art teaching spaces, as well as new lectureships and a range of activities.
The Director will lead the activities of the Postgraduate Statistics Centre (PSC) and will direct postgraduate teaching in the department. The teaching and administrative duties attached to the post during the first four years will be directed towards the PSC, but the research duties can be focussed on any statistical research area (including teaching statistics). The position is indefinite, and will continue beyond 2010, when HEFCE funding ceases. Candidates should have an enthusiasm for exploring innovative statistics teaching at postgraduate level and an interest in developing new collaborations both within Lancaster and with other institutions to provide specialist short training programmes. They should have a research profile commensurate with the professorial nature of the position, and will be able to lead the department and gain funding in new teaching and /or research related activities in statistics.
Lancaster already is one of the largest UK Statistics research groups with 29 academic staff, 14 research associates, 30 research students and 22 MSc students. The research and teaching interests of the Lancaster Statistics Group are diverse. Research varies from theory, methodology and applications in Statistics and Applied Probability. A unique strength of the Group is the breadth and depth of collaborative research with Medicine, Social Science, Finance, Biology, Veterinary and Environmental Science, Management Science and other areas of Mathematics. Teaching reflects the research diversity, including: an Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Degree Programme; an MSc Programme in Statistical Science, which currently has optional schemes in Medical Statistics and Environmental Statistics; an MSc in Applied Social Statistics; and a range of collaborative teaching, including short courses, with other disciplines.
