PHD STUDENTSHIPS (ref 267)
The UCL Department of Epidemiology and Public Health invites applications for research studentships beginning in October 2006, to work in one of the following areas: epidemiology and medical sociology, health psychology, or dental public health. The Department offers a unique environment to those wishing to undertake interdisciplinary study. Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first or upper second class degree in an appropriate discipline. An MSc in a relevant subject would also be an advantage. All applicants are encouraged to visit the Departmental web-site (www.ucl.ac.uk/epidemiology), review the studies and potential supervisors, considering their research interests in relation to this information.
Each award will cover home fees and full stipend for three years. The stipend will be £14,000 pa in year one. Applications should include a CV, an indication of the topic area(s) of interest, a statement of research experience and interests, a clear indication of any financial awards already applied for or existing funding secured, and the names and contact details for two academic referees. Applications should be addressed to: Floriana Bortolotti, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCL, 1-19 Torrington Place, London WC1E 6B ([log in to unmask]). Application deadline: 31st January 2006.
If you wish to discuss possible research topics and opportunities, please contact the Deputy Head of Department, Professor Andrew Steptoe (020 7679 5628 or via [log in to unmask]) or Graduate Tutors, Professor James Nazroo (020 7679 1705, [log in to unmask]) and Dr Yvonne Kelly (020 7679 5638, [log in to unmask]).
General
The number of funded places is not yet finalized. It is known that the Department will be receiving one or more MRC funded studentships. There will also be the opportunity to enter appropriately qualified applicants for an ESRC/MRC scheme, the details of which will be released early in 2006. And a further place will be funded to work on Whitehall II data that will provide the opportunity to undertake the MSc in Social Epidemiology, followed by a three year fully funded PhD. The level of support in each case will be equivalent to MRC rates.
