This provides details of four events on the Treasury's proposals for
independence for statistics, announced in March.

The Royal Statistical Society is consulting widely on its response to

Three events are aimed specifically at RSS members though are open to
all with an interest in this important issue:

FUTURE GOVERNANCE OF OFFICIAL STATISTICS

Programme
The seminar will be chaired by Professor David Rhind, chairman of the
Statistics Commission, John Healey MP, the Financial Secretary to the
Treasury, and Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, will open
the event. John Pullinger, chair of the Royal Statistical Society's
National Statistics Working Party, will present an overview of the main
issues regarding the future needs of the statistical system.
The keynote speeches on the value of public trust will be given by
Baroness Onora O'Neill, who gave the critically acclaimed Reith Lectures
A Question of Trust in 2002 and Professor Sir Denis Pereira Gray,
chairman of the Nuffield Trust.
To further stimulate debate, various stakeholders will present short
statements from their various perspectives, including Professor Adrian
Smith, Principal of Queen Mary, University of London and chair of the
Home Office working group on crime statistics, Chris Giles, FT Economics
Editor, Suzanne Hall, Associate Director, MORI, and Lord Moser, former
Head of the Government Statistical Service.
The event will be followed by a Reception at 5.30pm, giving you a chance
to exchange views with a wide cross-section of people with an interest
in official statistics.
