Deaar friends:
Scientists involved in animal testing are very very interested in
statistics. They feel statisticians as very important pieces in their
investigations. One of the most important concerns is on using the correct
number of animals in their experiments and to optimize experimental
designs. Maybe one does not want to support iniciatives as the online
petition, but anyone should be open-minded to explore knowledge areas
beyond his/her owns.
This looks like a cartoon in a scientific journal I saw some years ago.
Two frames. On the first a "scientist" is prostrated adoring a huge
"P=0.05" engraved on a "Ten-Commandments-like" stone; the legend says:
"The scientist perception of God". On the second frame, a hadsome and
fashion-dressed guy is looking himself reflected on a mirror; the legend
says: "The biostatistician perception of God". We know that both positions
are wrong, don't we?
Laboratory animal scientists are wishing to hear us, as statisticians, and
to incorporate us in their multidisciplinary teams. Do not hesitate about
this. Its a relatively new science, and they feel that better research can
be done with our aid. On the other hand, statisticians work can be done
only on the basis of the data that are get by other scientists. The
greater number of disciplines, more work there will be for us.
Greetings
Frederic

Re: [allstat] online petition pro animal testing
How is it related? Are statistical models and tests different if one uses
animals or humans? This is an authentic question--I am not a
biostatistician so this makes me wonder.
