I have created a sample size calculator. The purpose
was very simple. Suppose you are going to send
campaign mailers to a group of people. Now how many
people should be mailed so as to get a specified
percent of response, given the confidence level, total
size of population and range of error. Normally the
range of error is taken to be 5%. The problem is the
people for whom I have created this sample size
calculator are not from a statistics background. Hence
they are not at all clear with understanding of this
"range of error" parameter to be passed to the
calculator and are hence mis-using it. Now option is
to automatically fix the value of range of error to
5%. But is there any other way to overcome this
problem. I mean is there any way to automatically
estimate a the value of range of error from confidence
interval, total size of population and the percent of
response.
