MRC GENERAL PRACTICE RESEARCH FRAMEWORK
STATISTICIAN
Salary in range £28,554 - £34,094 p.a. inc.
The Medical Research Council (MRC) General
Practice Research Framework (GPRF) is a network
of 1060 General Practices throughout the UK that
collaborate with the MRC in undertaking high
quality research. Our studies are mainly funded
by government and national charities.
The statistician will be required to provide
statistical support at the co-ordinating centre,
in particular to support mental health research
conducted on the large clinical databases, such
as the General Practice Research Database (GPRD).
The post holder will be responsible to Professor
Irwin Nazareth, Director of the GPRF. The person
will also work closely with the Senior Clinical
Scientists. Collaborative work will also be
encouraged with the epidemiologist, statistician,
trial managers, data managers, and programmers
within the GPRF and the MRC Clinical Trials Unit
(CTU). The applicant will also work closely with
relevant statisticians at University College
London (UCL). The main duties of the post include
analysing data from established general practice
clinical databases (such as GPRD) and on existing
mental health research that is being conducted in
collaboration with the GPRF, working closely with
the Senior Clinical Scientists and the Director
to develop the statistical methods on grant
proposals. The successful candidate will be
developing material for the various web sites
where the GPRF scientific programmes are
publicized and preparing data record forms and
standardised operating procedures for existing
general practice research. They will also be
training clinical investigators and others as
required on statistical and research methods and
identifying opportunities for publication from
the literature and the research being conducted at GPRF.
We are seeking to attract a person with an MSc in
medical research (e.g. Medical Statistics), or a
PhD. Good knowledge of using standard data
analyses packages and experience in health
related research is essential. Previous
experience in mental health research and/or
research experience in primary care is highly
desirable. In addition, the successful applicant
must have excellent communication skills,
excellent computer skills including literature
searching, possess initiative and be able to work
effectively in a team and be willing to take
responsibility for the day-to-day running of the projects.
The duration of this position is initially for 1 year.
Benefits include 30 days annual leave days per

inclusive of Location Allowance and Central London Supplement.
The salary is dependent on previous experience
and will be negotiable for exceptional candidates.
