Pathways to early retirement: Agency and structure in the British Civil
Service
With a trend of declining levels of labour market activity among those
approaching the 'standard' retirement age, the first talk will provide
empirical evidence contrasting the influences on early retirement among
those at the higher and lower ends of the wealth spectrum. The second talk
will use semi-structured interview data to report on the motivations of
civil servants as to timing of retirement, including both structural
influences and individuals' own wishes.
