Call for Papers

The International Statistical Institute/International Association for Urban and Regional Statistics’ Standing Committee on Regional and Urban Statistics(SCORUS) are pleased to announce the main call for papers for their 25th Conference on Urban and Regional Statistics and Research. The main theme of the conference is:

                                   Globalization Impact on Regional and Urban Statistics

The conference consists of invited paper sessions in the following areas:
1. Regional patterns of foreign direct investment, to include papers on, e.g.:
	effects of FDI on the regional development of the host countries; 
	the role of trans-national corporations; 
	regional financial markets and globalization;
	impact of business relocation on local economic growth, etc.
2. International cities as poles of economic growth, to include papers on, e.g.:
	international cities as centres of growth;
	urban futures 
	economic growth in urban systems - the regional distribution
3. Regional effects of international migration, to include papers on, e.g.:
	the profile and impact of international migration on the evolution of internal migration within the host countries; 
	effects on the domestic labour market of the host country 
	impact on the social cohesion of the receiving country 
	policies and evidence.
4. Location, agglomeration and clustering, to include papers on, e.g.:
	regional effects of industrial location; 
	determinants of spatial choice and attractiveness of certain areas; 
	regional attractiveness: indicators for tourism development;
	the role of infrastructure and accessibility. 
5. Functional regions, to include papers on, e.g.:
	defining functional urban regions; 
	analytical uses of functional regions
	 innovations and urban regions
	metropolitan regions 
6. The role of international organisations in understanding globalisation, to include papers on, e.g.:
	how organisations such as the UN, OECD and EU can help in the analyses and understanding of the impact of globalisation;
	differences in the impact of globalisation on each continent 
7. China: 
	session in Chinese, 
	devoted to the main interests of the Chinese audience;
8. Measuring inequality at local level, to include papers on, e.g.:
	local / regional indicators of social welfare
	indices of  deprivation, diversity, poverty
	social issues, living conditions, quality of life 
	minorities issues
	modelling of needs: social welfare, income and poverty
	measuring inequalities in large urban areas
	social exclusion etc.;
9. Regions of the world and their role in / impact on the global economy, to include papers on:
o	Africa
o	Americas
o	Europe [including urban audit]
o	India
o	China
10 Geographical analyses: making the most of existing data
o	Standardised interfaces
o	Visualisation techniques
o	GIS – bringing data to lufe

For a paper to be considered for the invited paper sessions an abstract need to be submitted by the 30th May 2006 as detailed below.

In addition to the invited paper sessions, papers may be submitted up until the 20th August for inclusion in the contributed paper sessions. Papers are especially welcomed in the following areas:
